State of New Jersey: Lowest Rate of Divorce in the US
With New Jersey being the object of romantic relationship scuttlebutt (and pop culture jokes) on a regular basis, you would think that the divorce rate might be higher than that of other states in the US; but you’d be wrong. Reality shows like Jersey Shore and the Real Housewives of New Jersey, even real life scandals, such as the ‘Bridgegate’ investigations, soar in popularity, and then eventually ebb away – but the fact of the matter is that marriage is an institution in New Jersey that doesn’t fade so quickly. New Jersey State currently has the lowest rate of divorce in the entire country.
Well-known New Jersey marriage expert, Marty Tashman, suggests that part of the reason is that Jerseyans are better educated and have more money. Additionally, he referenced the diverse population of New Jersey, noting that they might not be inclined to divorce so quickly. He believes that the more ethnically diverse population may have more traditional values regarding getting, and then staying, married.
Marriage Statistics Throughout America
The most recent U.S. Census report also notes that the Northeast section of the United States has the lowest rate of divorce in the nation, with New Jersey leading the pack, followed by New York.
On the other hand, the ‘Bible Belt’ has the most shotgun weddings – and the most divorces. Rutgers Sociology Professor, Deborah Carr, said, “People assume that (married couples) in the Northeast divorce easily because they’re less religious, but that’s not the case.” Couples might often remain together because it is too costly for them to split up.
